As a disciple of Jesus working in government, people have often said to me. “You need to read Daniel, there is so much good stuff in there for you.” I would read it from time to time and catch little things, but I really did not get the utility of it until my Pastor put it a little clearer to me.
I made a transition to work for someone who had a different set of values than I do. I could almost always tell former bosses who shared my faith that I do not want to do “X” because I didn’t feel it was morally right. In this case, I didn’t have that same option. I wondered how I was going to manage those grey areas that often exist morally in government and politics. I was talking to my pastor about this and he said, “You need to be as wise as Daniel when dealing with your boss.”
Immediately the light came on! I finally got it. I had to rely on God for a way to explain situations to my new boss that would connect with him. In Daniel 1:8-20, Daniel provided the guard with a practical way to judge him and his friends compared to the other men over a ten day period. There was a lot less risk in it for the guard – and in the end it even made him look good!
Now I rely on God to give me ideas on how to tell my boss I think doing something is wrong and then I trust Him to soften my boss’ heart. Just as Daniel experienced God’s faithfulness – so has this disciple!
